Tyga Interview

Listen to More: We Got Next

When an artist is flanked by the attribute, “no introduction necessary,” it often implies that their successful resume speaks for itself. With the launch of rapper Tyga’s new summertime single, “Coconut Juice,” the first track off his forthcoming debut, “No Introduction,” the 18-year-old rapper has made this overture clear.

Inked to a record deal with Pete Wentz’s (of the pop-punk band, Fall Out Boy) Decaydance Records (courtesy of Travis McCoy’s Bat Squad), and aligned with Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, Tyga has no shortage of A-list support. That is further evidenced by the Compton native’s inclusion on a recently wrapped Spring Campus Tour with fellow rising stars, the Gym Class Heroes and Kidz In The Hall.

In an exclusive interview with DJBooth‘s DJZ,” Tyga steps inside the booth to talk about how growing up in California makes it difficult to obtain a record deal, which college campus has the most beautiful co-eds, and why he truly needs “No Introduction.” SOURCE

'Hottest MCs In The Game': The List Rolls On With Young Jeezy At #8

The Snowman makes the cut with a heap of guest appearances and the promise of a new album.

In summer 2007, the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust sat down and had another controversial roundtable debate. Unlike previous discussions, the trustees devised a list of not the greatest ever, but the Hottest MCs in the Game right then. The rankings were based on lyrics, flow, impact on the game, success and swagger.

The roundtable recently reconvened and came up with a brand-new list of Hottest MCs. Our experts used the same criteria, but only judged on the past year of hip-hop. Check back to see the whole list right after the show on Friday night! "The Hottest MCs in the Game" airs on MTV Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

Flame Thrower: Young Jeezy

Why He's Hot
He can dominate the show on a posse cut with some of his most mic-savvy peers, then successfully facilitate requests from mainstream mainstays like Mariah Carey and Usher, who call him to sanctify their #1 albums and songs with his seamless street swagger. Young Jeezy is at his pinnacle. Don't misconstrue the ranking: He's #8 with a bullet. We fully expect the Atlanta hustler to rank higher next time. After the release of USDA's LP Cold Summer in mid-2007, Mr. 17.5 shut down publicly to work on his top-secret third album and "count all that money."

Even with a break, the 'hood's loyalty toward him has remained, and when he re-emerged on records like Shawty Lo's "Dey Know" remix and Rick Ross' "Luxury Tax," it was evident he was setting himself up for a run at the crown. His placements of late — the actual songs he's chosen to get on — have been flawless, ranging from chart hits to club anthems. The Snowman's rhyme-dispensing on these records has also been stellar. He's improving as a lyricist, and he has so much swag that you can tell he's inspired a whole brood of new southern MCs to bite his style.

Apathetic to his clones, Jeezy is ready to go all the way over the top with it on his next album. Three years since the release of his classic Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, he feels that the experience he has under his belt has made him a better artist. Not a hustler who raps, but an artist. Young is dedicated to his craft, as his new collaboration with Kanye West, "Put On," proves. Don't pack your heavy coat away yet. The Snowman will keep the summer on frio.

GAME Wants to Sign Man That Knocked Out Suge

The Game hopes to sign the man that knocked out Suge Knight in a Hollywood altercation last weekend. The popular Compton rapper made the revelation on the Hot 97 Funkmaster Flex radio show last night.

"He's the Knockout Kid. We was looking for him, we found him, and trying to sign him," The Game revealed in the on-air interview.

The Game and Knight have had tense moments as well, but ended the friction a mere two days before the Death Row mogul was rendered unconscious by a right hook.

"I just think you win some, you lose some," The Game stated. "[Suge's] not a boxer. It's not like he's Muhammad Ali, and he's been in the game and somebody finally beats you."

Suge Knight and his Death Row Records reigned throughout the 90's with a stable of artists that included Dr. Dre, Lady of Rage, The Dogg Pound and Snoop Dogg.

The Game said he feels that the older generation is going to have to respect the young up-and-comers.

"Suge, back in the day, he had it locked in LA. But now, your time comes and goes, and you have to respect the new breed, and now that's me. I got L.A. locked, and 10 years from now there will be a new dude," he explained. "Ten years from now, when I'm 40, there's gonna be a new kid and I gotta respect that dude. Hopefully, the Knockout Kid's little brother don't hit me or something ... or step to me. I don't want no problems with the Knockout Kid."

The Game stated that, while there is still a lot of talk, the KO wasn't really a major deal in the grand scheme of things.

"I just know everybody gots a chin, and when hit in the right place, you go down," he said.

The Game is preparing to release his third album L.A.X. (Los Angeles Times) is due in stores July 8.

The man that knocked Knight out has released a video on YouTube.

Countdown till The Carter III - Webisode

Lil Wayne: Countdown To The Carter III Webisode Exclusive

Learn why Wayne has left an indelible mark on hip-hop.

May 12, 2008 - There's no doubt that Lil Wayne is one of the shining stars to emerge from the Cash Money Millionaires crew who have seemed to dominate Southern based rap for the past decade-and-some-change.

Wayne first emerged on the scene as a member of The Hot Boys along with Juvenile, Turk, and B.G., but has since has managed to parlay a successful solo career with a string of albums, notable guest appearances, and an unbridled sense of bravado.

On June 10th, 2008, Wayne will drop Tha Carter III, his latest studio effort.

To set up the album we've snagged an installment of a Webisode entitled Countdown To Tha Carter 3 in which a number of folks recount why Lil Wayne has managed to leave a memorable imprint on rap music in such a short span of time.

TERMINATE ON SIGHT: COVER

Rapper RZA Introduces "Digi Snacks" Album

RZA's much beloved character Bobby Digital returns this summer with "Digi Snacks," a brand new studio album via KOCH Records. "Digi Snacks" will be out in July of 2008.

The Bobby Digital character was introduced some ten years ago with the release of "In Stereo" and went underground seven years ago after the release of "Digital Bullet." To date, Bobby Digital releases have sold a combined 1 million units.

"This world wasn't in a digital format in 1998. Now digital is the most compelling force of commerce and entertainment," RZA explains. "So this is like a re-launch of the character." And some of the 'real life' characters that Bobby Digital tapped for "Digi Snacks" definitely lend to the mission: John Frusciante, Dhani Harrison, The Black Knights, Dexter Wiggles, Shavo Odadjian (System of a Down), Reverend William Burke, Stone Mecca and Scandinavian newcomer Thea. There's even a track produced by David Banner. He continues, "I think 'Digi Snacks' is an album with a lot of fun. This album is more of a performance album too. When you see it live, you'll get a difference experience. I'm not trying to get into the world... I'm trying to bring the world to come to us."

To celebrate the release of "Digi Snacks," RZA will embark on a National U.S. tour with the future-soul group Stone Mecca as his backing band.

RZA has produced a number of albums for the Wu Tang Clan, its affiliates, and other A-list artists that have led to sales in the millions. He has a successful movie career and has appeared in films with Bill Murray ("Coffee & Cigarettes"), Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe ("American Gangster"), Angela Bassett ("Gospel Hill"), Jude Law & Forest Whitaker ("Repossession Mambo"), and Clive Owens ("Derailed"). RZA's also created soundtracks for Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" Vol. 1 & 2, "Afro Samurai" and the cult-classic "Ghostdog: The Way Of The Samurai." He's revolutionized the hip-hop world while simultaneously creating an empire upon it. And yet RZA says, "I've only just begun to enter my prime."

Described by his colleagues, admirers, and even haters alike as a "mad scientist," Robert Diggs, aka RZA, comes across more like a relentless warrior. And like any good warrior, he's on a mission... an honorable quest to infect all he comes across with a positive polarity. "You taste everything every day. You go through these different shifts of positives and negatives throughout your whole day," he explains. "I just make more of a fiction thing around it, metaphors in all different ways. That's all I'm doing. You get the Manga, you get the Martial Arts, you get the Sci-Fi, you get the Blaxploitation, but you still get your real life because I'm a real person."

Engulfed in a full-on story of revenge, betrayal, seduction, hustlin' and pimpin' slaves as souls, completed with a cast of characters that includes the return of The Raven, The Hawk, The Eagle, The Vulture, The four fouls of prey and, of course, Barbara Peppers, Bobby Digital explains, "If you follow the character, he's always talking with himself between good and evil, trying to balance himself. Sometimes when you think you're all the way at the end, you're actually at the beginning."

The Bobby Digital tour dates featuring Stone Mecca are:

1. June 10 Houston, TX - Warehouse Live
2. June 11 Austin, TX - Emo's
3. June 12 Dallas, TX - Palladium Ballroom
4. June 14 Denver, CO - Cervantes Ballroom
5. June 15 Salt Lake City, UT - Urban Lounge
6. June 17 Tucson, AZ - Rialto Theater
7. June 18 Phoenix, AZ - The Brickhouse
8. June 20 Los Angeles, CA - Henry Fonda Theater
9. June 21 San Francisco, CA - 1015
10. June 23 Portland, OR - Hawthorne Theater
11. June 24 Seattle, WA - Showbox
12. June 25 Vancouver, CAN - Richards
13. June 27 Calgary, CAN - Sled Island Festival
14. June 30 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue
15. July 1 Chicago, IL - House of Blues
16. July 2 Pontiac, MI - Crofoot Ballroom
17. July 4 Ottawa, CAN - New Capital Hall
18. July 5 New York, NY - Webster Hall
19. July 7 Philadelphia, PA - Trocadero
20. July 8 Washington, DC - 9:30 Club

The rest of his virtual super-enigma includes WuChess.com, "a great platform for the digital world... a whole new world of myth and reality where people can come talk about chess and challenge the Wu members in our chambers," a video game, a comic book, and a film, all in development and all mostly focusing on the story of a digital superhero who "transforms into a powerful being that struggles with the good and evil inside himself by saving the lives of others."

'Hottest MCs In The Game': Is A Huge Hit Enough To Get Soulja Boy On The List?

Some of the young rapper's detractors say his music lacks substance.

Two days, two names and two Atlanta natives.

The rollout of rankings in the 2008 "Hottest MCs in the Game" list continued Thursday (May 15) with Andre 3000 being revealed as number 9. On Wednesday, number 10 turned out to be T.I. One of the big questions surrounding the final eight slots is about yet another ATL performer — the guy with the biggest hit of the last year, Soulja Boy Tell'em.

"Crank That" was a worldwide phenomenon, with just about everybody and their mother knowing both the song and its dance moves. CNN even reported on the track, which lays claim to being the highest-selling ringtone of all time with more than 3 million downloads. Soulja Boy Tell'em's debut LP, Souljaboytellem.com, went platinum, and he had hit follow-ups with "Soulja Girl" and "Yahhh!"

Papoose Dismisses 'Ridiculous' Remy Ma Escape-Plot Rumors, Promises Appeal And Wedding

'Everybody knows if it was a felony, I would have been arrested,' rapper says of skeleton key confiscated by corrections officer.

With thoughts of injustice flowing through his mind, Papoose erupted in anger in a New York courtroom Tuesday after hearing that his fiancee, Remy Ma, had been sentenced to eight years in prison.

"I got a little bit aggravated. I think anybody would," Pap, wearing a wedding band on his ring finger, said in New York's Platinum Studios Wednesday. "To see a female get persecuted like that for something they didn't do. ... Then, on the other hand, you see Sean Bell get murdered by police and they just walk out the courtroom. A crime they admitted they did. Then somebody that's suspected of a crime goes to jail and gets sentenced to eight years. These police gun a man down and murder him. In the same city a mother gets snatched away from her child. It's aggravating."

Remy Ma (born Reminisce Smith) was sentenced after being convicted of shooting her onetime close friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph during a dispute over money. Smith claimed that Barnes-Joseph stole $3,000 from her.

"I never seen a case with more issues, more grounds for appeal than hers," said Pap, who called Remy's lawyer, Ivan Fisher, "incompetent." "Everybody had different stories. Nobody's stories matched. They all lied on the stand. It's disgusting. It's obvious what that case was about."

Fisher had no comment on Papoose's statements when reached by MTV News on Thursday (May 15).

TAKING THE #9 SPOT IS....ANDRE 3000

'Hottest MCs In The Game': The List Heats Up With Our #9 Selection, Outkast's Andre 3000

3000 has had more impact in about 40 bars this year than many peers can boast on their entire albums.

Check back Friday morning for #8 — and see the whole list right after the show on Friday night! "The Hottest MCs in the Game" airs on MTV Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

Flame Thrower: Andre 3000

Why He's Hot
No album, no single, only two guest appearances — Andre did even less this year than he did in 2007. There's not even a handful of verses to judge him on. Should the Hip-Hop Brain Trust members be found guilty of treason for giving Andre a slot in the top 10 despite minimum output?

Absolutely not.

Tres Stacks has illustrated natural bravura over brainless bravado, dropping judiciously dope couplets laced with gentlemanly swagger that brew to a crescendo and shed every note in their way.

Splendidly subtle N.W.A reference here, magnificent drug metaphor there — before you know it, this legend has had more impact in about 40 bars than many peers can boast on their entire long-play discs. 3000 may be the most inspiring MC right now, because everything we've heard from him in the past several months has been methodically dead-right. His album isn't slated to drop until later this year, which could be 2009 in Andre time. It's all good, as long as all this teasing of his excellence results in another classic opus.

T.I falls to the #10 Spot

'Hottest MCs In The Game': The Countdown Begins! And #10 Is ...

T.I. was a top-spot contender last year, but legal woes have forced the MC to scale back his output.

By Shaheem Reid

In summer 2007, the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust sat down and had another controversial roundtable debate. Unlike previous discussion, the trustees devised a list of not the greatest ever, but the Hottest MCs in the Game right then. The rankings were based on lyrics, flow, impact on the game, success and swagger.

The roundtable recently reconvened and came up with a brand-new list of Hottest MCs. Our experts used the same criteria, but only judged on the past year of hip-hop. Check back Thursday morning to find out who's #9, Friday morning for #8 -- and see the whole list right after the show on Friday night! "The Hottest MCs in the Game" airs on MTV Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

Flame Thrower: T.I.

Why He's Hot
Hold up. Just last year, T.I. was up for debate to be #1, and now he slips to #10? What happened? First of all, let's be clear: Tip's decline in ranking has nothing to do with his skills. We all know that he is still one of the best in the business. Unfortunately, since almost topping the last list, Tip had to take an unforeseen, unwelcome hiatus when he was arrested in November on a slew of gun charges, leading to more than six months of house arrest. Promotions for his platinum T.I. vs. T.I.P. came to an end. The kibosh was put on the single "Hurt" and its video. Any chance of dropping another LP at the top of '08 was thwarted quick. Movies, endorsements — everything shut down. He says his arrest probably cost him between $10 million and $12 million. Musically, he was inactive for months while many of his peers continued to put out sterling material.

In March, he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to more than 1,500 hours of community service. He still faces a reported year in prison. But Tip didn't fall completely off the map during his time on the bench. He brought several thousand fans to the Web site StreetCred.com simply by posting a video message telling folks he was OK. Tip's swag was at Hugh Hefner level, talking to his fans via webcam in a robe and slippers. In March, he dominated headlines simply by taking his family to church and speaking on the serious issue of AIDS prevention.

Lil Wayne Blender Interview

DR. WEEZY....The biggest mouth in hip-hop loves Nirvana, loves codeine-spiked cough syrup even more—and has no idea what a koala is.

Hot Beats Recording Studios sits on the southwest side of Atlanta, tucked into a desolate stretch of road where every third streetlamp is burnt out. The building is stubby and drab: its facade gray concrete, its windows opaque. If it weren’t for the tour bus idling in the parking lot, the gaggle of luxury SUVs and the XXXL-size sentries keeping watch, you could mistake the place for an auto-parts wholesaler fallen into disuse. When Lil Wayne is in town, this is where he spends his evenings (and dead-of-nights, and early mornings). “They let me come in whenever,” he says. “And that works, ’cause I’m a man who doesn’t keep a regular schedule.”

These days, the New Orleans–born rapper, 25, splits his time between Atlanta, Miami and the road. He says he spends about 200 days a year on his tour bus. “I don’t have a home,” he notes. He’s wearing pristine high-tops, distressed designer jeans and a tight black T-shirt; and he’s clasping a Styrofoam cup full of promethazine-codeine cough syrup (one accessory he’s never without). “It’s supposed to make you sleepy,” he explains. “But I must have one badass immune system, because it just keeps me going. You’d think it was cocaine.”

The stuff works for him. Wayne has been known to record upward of a dozen songs in a single night, and his vast catalogue of straight-to-the-Net mix tapes—breathtaking, free-associative dispatches from a dimension where the typical rules of hip-hop no longer apply—is evidence of his frenzied output. Tonight, though, he’s concentrating on the biggest release of his career—Tha Carter III—which will prove whether or not Wayne can translate the unhinged genius of his mix tapes into an actual, honest-to-God album.

Well, he’d like to be concentrating on the LP, but first there’s the matter of your questions. Is he ready for the third degree? “Let’s go, man,” he says, grinning. “I’ve had to deal with worse.”
